Sḵwx̱wú7mesh … or Skokomish or Squamish

Fishing camp, Skokomish BC, 1912. This picture was taken by Edward S Curtis, who published many impressive volumes of photographs of the North American Indians.”

The last two names in the title are the less-accurately-rendered anglicized version of the original Salish linguistic group name. If the photo caption location is correct, this Native group originally lived around today’s Vancouver and areas to the north. They are not connected (except by language group) with the Skokomish name in Washington State.

The west coast fur trade, foreign diseases, gold rushes, settlement and The Indian Act made their lives progressively less traditional and less prosperous.
